Why Panels Get So Dirty in the Desert

Solar Panel Washing matters more in Scottsdale than in rainier places. The city averages about 8.73 inches of rain a year at Scottsdale Municipal Airport, so the natural rinse that cleans panels elsewhere comes only a few times a year. Between storms, fine dust settles on the glass, and summer storms with wind can leave a heavier coat at once. Light rain on a dusty panel can make things worse, turning dust into a muddy film that dries in place.

What a dirty panel costs you

Dirt does not stop a panel from working, but it cuts the light reaching the cells. An even film of dust lowers output across the array. Spots are a bigger concern: a bird dropping or a patch of debris that shades part of a single cell can drag down that panel, and on some string systems the panels wired with it, more than its size suggests. Panels with a low tilt, which is common on Scottsdale roofs, also hold dirt along the bottom edge where rain runs off.

How we wash

  • Pure water: deionized or filtered water that dries without leaving mineral spots, which matters with the hard water common in the Valley
  • Soft brushes: non-abrasive bristles that will not scratch the glass or its anti-reflective coating
  • No harsh chemicals: no soap residue, solvents or pressure washers, which can damage seals and coatings or void warranties
  • Early or late in the day: cold water on very hot glass can stress it, so we work when panels are cooler
  • Careful footing: on concrete tile we stay on planned paths and use reach poles where we can

More than a wash

While on the roof we look for things a wash can reveal: cracked glass, browning or hot spots on cells, loose wiring resting on tile, and the first signs of pigeons moving under the array. If we see a problem, you get photos and a note, and repairs are priced separately. Many owners pair a wash with pigeon guards, since droppings are often the reason they called.

How often to wash

There is no single schedule that suits every home. Panels near unpaved lots, construction, desert washes or golf course maintenance get dirty faster. A simple test is to compare production right before and right after a wash; if the gain is noticeable, wash again when production slips by a similar amount. Many owners wash before the spring production peak and again after the summer storm season.

Doing it yourself

If you can reach the panels safely from the ground with a soft brush on a pole and a hose, rinsing in the early morning is reasonable. Do not climb onto a tile roof, do not use a pressure washer, and do not spray hot panels with cold water.

Solar Panel Washing Questions

Will rain clean my panels?

A hard rain helps, but Scottsdale gets so little that dust builds up for long stretches. Light rain often leaves a dried muddy film, and bird droppings rarely wash off on their own.

Can I use a pressure washer?

No. High pressure can force water past seals and damage the glass coating, and some manufacturers say not to use it. Low-pressure water and a soft brush are safer.

Why do you avoid washing at midday?

Panel glass gets very hot in the Scottsdale sun, and cold water on hot glass can stress it. Washing when panels are cooler is also more effective, since water does not flash-dry into spots.

Does washing affect my warranty?

Gentle washing with water and a soft brush is what most manufacturers recommend. Abrasive tools, harsh chemicals and pressure washers are what to avoid.
